Ranks

As with all professional military organizations, the Thalassian Legion upholds a rigorous rank structure. The primary purpose of this is to maintain a clear chain of command and define the authority, responsibilities, and levels of expertise of service members. However, it also provides opportunities for advancement and leadership roles through demonstrated competence. This structure is essential for organizational efficiency, effective communication, and sound decision-making, ensuring that all personnel understand their respective roles within the chain of command.

The Thalassion Legion’s ranks are divided between Commissioned Personnel and Enlisted Personnel.

Commissioned Personnel are individuals entrusted with the authority to issue directives and make broader decisions regarding deployment—leaders decided upon by High Command. They are the people who are held responsible for safeguarding the Kingdom of Quel’Thalas, including but not limited to the lives of those under their command. Enlisted Personnel are individuals within the varying levels of rank-and-file who make up the majority of the Thalassian Legion’s membership. They aren’t saddled with the same burden of leadership, though they may yet be commissioned personnel in the making someday.

Commissioned Personnel

High Command: While the Ranger-General holds the overarching military authority of Quel’Thalas, High Command presently serves as the principal authority within the Fourth Thalassian Legion itself. Charged with the leadership of the legion, they bear the collective responsibility in their respective capacities, each commanding designated battalions. Furthermore, they function jointly as military judges for crimes committed—whether by their own forces, enemy combatants, or civilians under the protection of Quel’Thalas.

The Elites: As the second-in-command to their respective High Commanders, the Elites of the Fourth Thalassian Legion are individuals authorized to assume leadership and oversee their respective battalions in the event of their Commander’s absence or incapacitation. They are also accountable for ensuring that the regiment is adequately supplied and that Aides are appropriately trained to lead at the individual level. There is only one Elite per division; the only exception to this is the Legionnaires, who in time aim to have one Elite for each subdivision.

  • The Elites of the Legionnaires are called “Oathkeepers”
  • The Elite of the Inquisitorious is called “Second Shadow”
  • The Elite of the Magistrum is called “Second Magister”

The Aides: If the Elites are the second-in-command to High Command, then Aides are the second-in-command to the Elite. Aides are those who have been selected from the enlisted to become commissioned officers and serves as assistants to Elites however they may need.

  • The Aides of the Legionnaires are called “Master-at-Arms”
  • The Aides of the Inquisitorious are called “Shadow Eye” (Intelligence) and “Dark Hand” (Interrogation)
  • The Aide of the Magistrum is called “Magister Meritus”

Promotions

Promotions are done at the first Assembly of the Troops held after the Monthly (OOC) Officer Meeting. Those receiving promotions will be contacted in DMs ahead of times to ensure they are at the Assembly of the Troops so they can receive said promotion on the necessary character.

Promotions within the Thalassian Legion are decided by various factors.

The first and foremost of these is event attendance. There is no specific number of events a member needs to attend to receive a promotion, but someone with regular attendance is likely to be noticed. (Note that we have begun the practice of screenshotting the in-game Event Group before the start of events and holding onto them, so we can ensure we don’t accidentally gloss over anyone)

This leads into the second factor of presence. A character’s presence within the Thalassian Legion (both at events and outside of them) is incredibly likely to be seen and noted for qualities worthy of promotion, such as acts of service or demonstration of qualities deemed desirable by their Commander, their Elite, or their Aide.

A third factor for promotion is milestones. Has the character completed a big (Guild, CSC, Conquest) campaign? Did said character run/lead an event? Did they have a big shining moment where they got a noteworthy execution or intervention? They might get a promotion for their exemplary deed, or at least a medal.

Don’t be afraid to advocate for your character, either! If you feel like you were passed over, please politely bring it to us and sell us on it!
